WS-4000-ARRAY

Upgrade your station with the solar-powered WS-4000 Array, featuring haptic rain and ultrasonic wind technology with no moving parts. This compact, easy-to-install array measures temperature, humidity, dew point, rainfall, UV, heat index, solar radiation, wind direction, wind speed, and wind chill. A WS-2000 or WS-5000 Console is REQUIRED to utilize this array. It will also require a WS-4000 Mount and will not work with your existing WS-2000 or WS-5000 Mount.

The solar-powered Ambient Weather WS-4000 Array is designed for comprehensive environmental monitoring. It features sensors for temperature, humidity, haptic rain, light, ultraviolet, air pressure, and ultrasonic wind. A WS-2000 or WS-5000 Console is REQUIRED to utilize this array. When paired with a compatible console, this setup allows you to remotely monitor your weather station data on the easy-to-use Ambient Weather Network (AWN) App or by visiting ambientweather.net.

Design and Installation

  • All-In-One Design: The weather station has a sleek design that fits easily into any setting.
  • No Tools Required: It mounts effortlessly on a 1" diameter pole without requiring any tools.
  • WILL NOT WORK WITH WS-2000 or WS-5000 MOUNTS. Add the compatible WS-4000 Mounts in the drop-down above or click here.

Sensor Technology

  • Ultrasonic Wind Sensor: Ultrasonic wind uses a series of sound emitters and microphones to detect even the calmest of breezes for accurate speed and direction measurements.
  • Haptic Rain Gauge: The haptic rain gauge uses a piezoelectric sensor to measure raindrop pressure and calculate water volume, eliminating the need for a rain bucket and reducing maintenance. This design is also less attractive to birds and more resilient to high-speed winds and debris.

Power Supply

  • Primary Power: Solar panel on top of the station.
  • Backup Power: Two AA batteries ensure continuous operation.

Compatible Add-On Sensors:

  • WH31E Temperature & Humidity Sensor
  • WH31P Waterproof Probe Temperature Sensor
  • WH31PF Floating Pool Thermometer
  • WH51RF Refrigerator/Freezer Temperature Sensor
  • WH51LW Leaf Wetness Sensor
  • WH31SM Soil Moisture Sensor
  • WH31L Lightning Detector
  • WH31LA Leak Alert
  • AQIN Air Quality Monitor – PM2.5, PM10 and CO2
  • PM25 Outdoor PM2.5 Air Quality Monitor
  • PM25IN Indoor PM2.5 Air Quality Monitor

You may notice the sensor in the center of the top of the array is slightly angled. This is by design and is meant to prevent water from pooling on the sensor.... Permalink

If your WS-4000 is not recording rainfall, this can be attributed to a setting on your indoor console.

Please follow the steps below to ensure that your WS-4000 rain gauge is selected.

You will then press the down arrow to select Rainfall Data Priority.

You can then press the To select Haptic rain gauge.

Determining accuracy of rain gauge involves multiple factors
First, we need to take into account how they operate.

  • Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge:
    • Operates on a simple mechanical principle where a funnel collects rainwater and directs it into a bucket that tips when a certain amount of water is collected.
    • Each tip of the bucket represents a predetermined amount of rainfall (e.g., 0.2 mm).
  • Haptic Rain Gauge:
    • Uses electronic sensors to measure rainfall, often providing real-time data through haptic feedback.

Now that we have established this, we can then compare the accuracy.

Accuracy

  • Tipping Bucket:
    • Generally reliable, but results may be affected by wind, evaporation, and design characteristics. May underestimate rainfall during heavy storms due to splashing.
  • Haptic Rain Gauge:
    • Potential for high accuracy if the sensor technology is advanced. However, reliability can depend on the design and environmental conditions that may influence sensor readings..

Accuracy can be influence by the environment.

 Sensitivity to Environmental Factors

  • Tipping Bucket:
    • Sensitive t external factors like wind, which can cause inaccuracies due to evaporation or splashing. Proper placement is essential for accurate readings.
  • Haptic Rain Gauge:
    • May be sensitive to vibrations. Design factors determine how well it can handle environmental disturbances.

If you are experiencing an under-reporting of rain, you can calibrate the haptic rain gauge by referring to the calibration section of the WS-4000 manual.

AFC Mode: Enabling or disabling Automatic Frequency Control.

The AFC mode on the WS-4000, WS-2000, WS-5000 weather stations refers to "Automatic Frequency Control." This feature helps ensure that the station accurately receives and processes weather data by adjusting the frequency of the signals it receives. It can enhance the station's reliability and accuracy in measuring and displaying weather conditions. This enables the WS-4000, WS-2000, WS-5000 console to maintain a sold connection with the older Observer Array (WH24B)

The control console for the WS-2000, WS-5000, and WS-4000 require a 5V AC power adapter in order to operate.  If this adapter falls below 5V output, the console may experience this "STARTING" loop, or the device may lose function all together.  Replacing this AC adapter will most likely resolve this issue.
